NIMH Outreach Program

The Outreach Partnership Program is a nationwide initiative of the National Institutes of Mental Health Office of Constituency Relations and Public Liaison (OCRPL) and is supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The Program partners with national and state organizations to strengthen the public health impact of research by:

  • Disseminating the latest scientific findings
  • Informing the public about mental disorders and substance abuse
  • Reducing stigma and discrimination
  • Increasing public awareness about the important role of research in the treatment of mental illnesses and addiction disorders, paving the way for prevention, recovery, and cure.

  • A new report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) providing state-by-state analyses of substance abuse and mental illness patterns reveals that despite wide variations among the states in the types and levels of behavioral health problems they experience -- every state suffers from these problems.  For example, among those aged 12 and older, Iowa had less than one third the current illicit drug use rate of Rhode Island – yet Iowa’s population aged 12 and older was among the group of states with the nation’s highest levels of people participating in binge drinking in the past month.
  • Training Teleconference: Building an Inclusive Society. This SAMHSA teleconference will recognize the accomplishments of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and discuss the challenges that still remain in building a fully inclusive society, especially as they relate to people with psychiatric disabilities.
