Nearly 20% of women are affected by a postpartum mood disorder. Unfortunately, finding help for these women and their families can be a difficult and trying endeavor. A Mother’s Wings was started by two women whose families were affected by postpartum mood disorders. Both Tracy and Carla had very different symptoms and diagnoses, but they did have one thing in common. They had difficulty finding someone to help them with their illness. Both Tracy and Carla’s families spent countless hours talking with anyone who would listen to their pleas for support. It was finally through word of mouth and through friends that each of the women was able to find support. Tracy and Carla would like to make the journey to wellness and recovery easier for women and their families. They also feel it is important to better educate mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, doctors, therapists, any one who comes in contact with a new mother about postpartum mood disorders. A Mother’s Wings believe the more the community is educated, the more transformation and healing can begin for women suffering from these disorders.
Tracy and Carla felt it was necessary to put together a team of people who felt as strongly as they did about improving the lives of women affected by postpartum mood disorders. They found numerous professionals and consumers who are dedicated to making a difference. A Mother’s Wings advisory committee includes a pediatrician, a spouse who’s wife had postpartum anxiety, a National Trainer for Boot Camp for New Dads who’s wife experienced postpartum depression, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a private psychotherapy practice and who is also the State Coordinator for Postpartum Support International, a representative from Mental Health America of Colorado, a maternal child health nurse, and a healthcare ethicist for a hospital system in Wisconsin.
